Energy and Trade intensive industries (ETIIs) have struggled for a while with high energy prices. To further protect these businesses and allow them to keep their competitive edge in wider markets outside the UK, the government introduced a separate energy scheme for them.

When the government first introduced the energy discount scheme for businesses, they said there would be a further discount that certain industries would be able to access for help with their bills. Last week the government finally launched this scheme for ETIIs. They can now apply for extra support and get savings of up to 20% on business energy bills.

This support will work from the same dates as the energy discount scheme, it will be available from 1st April 2023 and 31st March 2024.

There are a range of sectors that are going to be able to take advantage of this scheme. Industries which are going to benefit the most remain to be manufacturing businesses, as well as this many ceramics and textiles firms have also expressed how their company will benefit.

As this support is only available for a limited amount of time, companies have been urged to check their eligibility and submit their applications as early as possible.

Why are ETIIs getting extra help with energy bills?

Businesses that are energy and trade-intensive have found themselves in a uniquely difficult position as higher energy prices are affecting their competitiveness in European markets where these types of businesses are getting a higher level of support with their energy bills.  Therefore, to avoid the shutdown of companies within these industries the government is offering them further support.

How can your business apply for extra energy support?

Firstly, if you think your business may qualify for this support you need to check your eligibility here. If your business is eligible for this support then the government has urged that you apply as soon as possible to receive this support.

If your business is eligible you can find an application here.

Before starting your application process if you are an eligible business there are some things you will need before you begin the process:

  • Energy supplier name and meter number
  • A declaration document to confirm that the eligibility criteria for the scheme have been met

Although you should not need much more for your eligibility form you could be asked to provide additional information. This could include information regarding accounts, sales or licenses or trade body membership for regulated industries.
